The ACC is not known to be a powerhouse on the gridiron the way it is on the hardwood courts. Nevertheless, this season there are teams in the ACC that could grab a BCS bowl and even a shot at the national title.
The top five teams in the ACC between the Atlantic and Coastal divisions are Florida State, Miami, Clemson, Virginia Tech and North Carolina.
Last season Florida State won its first title in the ACC since 2005, but did not reach its 10.5 wins for the season. This season the Seminoles are once again expected to win 10.5 games with the Over at +110 and the Under on -150.
The Seminoles have a tough schedule on the road this season with Clemson and Florida as their two biggest road foes. If they could win at least one of those games, they could have a good opportunity to end the season over. The Seminoles still could not reach that number and win the ACC championship, which is more realistic.
Clemson will have a tough team this season with quarterback Tajh Boyd returning. The Tigers have been tagged with a 10.5 wins total and the Over is on +165, with the Under on -215. Offensively, the Tigers could put up numbers never before seen at Clemson.
However, the schedule is tough starting at Georgia and ending at South Carolina. The Tigers are in the same situation as the Seminoles, they could win the ACC but not reach their win total, even though the payout for the over is tempting.
Three teams in the Coastal Division of the ACC Virginia Tech, Miami and North Carolina, have all been given 9.5 win totals.
For Virginia Tech the Over is on +140, while the Under is -180. Last season the Hokies needed a win in overtime to avoid its first losing season in 20 years.
However, this season the Hokies should bound back in fine fashion. Logan Thomas, an NFL prospect at quarterback will be the key after a subpar season last year.
However, they face Alabama to open the season and Miami to end it, which makes it seem difficult to believe they will reach 10 wins.
Miami at 9.5 has the Over on +150 and the Under at -190. With two years of self-imposed bans behind them, many in south Florida feel this is the season Miami returns to prominence.
Eighteen starters return for the Hurricanes on a team that tied for the Coastal Division title. Stephen Morris at quarterback will direct the offensive attack, while Duke Johnson at running back is strong and opposing. If they can beat Florida, 10 wins could be a possibility.
North Carolina has the Over on +170 and the Under at -230 for their 9.5 win total prediction. Longer odds have been given to their over, as the Tar Heels have not recorded 10 wins during the regular season in 16 seasons. This season will not end that way either.
