This weekend’s divisional playoff games in the NFL have a number of good betting storylines.
The Broncos host the hot Chargers and have revenge in mind as San Diego defeated Denver in Mile High in Week 15. The Panthers are hosting the 49ers and the point spread has gone from San Francisco -2.5 to pick ‘em back to the 49ers -1.
However, the biggest uncertainty of this weekend of NFL divisional playoffs for both bookmakers and bettors is how the severe weather will affect the game in Seattle when the Seahawks host the New Orleans Saints.
On Bovada, the total points fell three points from its open at 48.5 to 45.5 after a weather forecast said there was a 100% chance of rain and winds were expected of between 20 to 30 miles per hour.
The public on sites like topbet and betonline have sided with New Orleans, while sharp money on sportsbook.com has not showed its hand of yet.
As of late Friday night, Seattle was -7.5 up to -8 on different books.
A number of sites such as Bovada took early money on Seattle when it came out at -8, but now both teams are being supported and with some large bets.
Some books however do not feel the weather will affect the point total that much. Over the last three or four weeks of the regular season and last weekend’s wildcard games, inclement weather did not affect point totals dramatically.
Odds makers believe that often times, inclement weather helps the offense, as they know where they are going and the defense must react to that.
The line has gone up and down in the 49ers-Panthers matchup. Most odds makers believe another strong push on the 49ers will be made by the public that will push the line as high as -2.5 or even -3 for San Francisco.
The line on Denver and San Diego has seen a great deal of action for the Chargers, which has pushed the line from an opening of -10 for Denver to -9 and even -8.5 on some sites.
However, sharp money on the moneyline has been taking Denver feeling the Chargers do not perform well in the red zone squandering touchdown chances and taking 3s instead of posting 7s. When playing against Denver it is hard to win when you post 3s as they hardly ever post anything other than 7.
The Pats and Colts games opened at -9 on New England and some sites like topbet are down to -7.5 and others as low as -7. Of the four games on tap over the weekend, this matchup has seen the lowest handle thus far.
This weekend should bring in a big handle between the four games, with a number of teasers that could make things difficult for the house. Stay tuned.
