After the conclusion of the NBA Eastern Conference Finals, which saw the Miami Heat dominated down the stretch in Game 7 to eliminate the Boston Celtics, and with the Stanley Cup Finals series between the Los Angeles Kings and the New Jersey Devils being extended to another game on Monday night, today marks a rare day for Major League Baseball to nab the entire spotlight for online sportsbook betting. With the added fanfare of Interleague play taking place throughout the weekend, baseball fans will be treated to all the focus lying on some great cross-league showdowns, and some great opportunities for betting on sports at one of the best online sportsbooks reviewed here at CR. Let’s dive right into the action taking place around the baseball world on Sunday, and look for some top options for dropping wagers on at Bovada Sportsbook, our featured top sports betting destination to close out the weekend with.
First up on the docket, we’re looking towards the top pitching match-ups set up throughout the list of MLB games today, and first and foremost we’ll turn to a great showdown in South Florida between the Tampa Bay Rays and Miami Marlins, as Tampa’s James Shields (6-4, 4.27 ERA) gets set to take on Miami’s Annibal Sanchez (3-4, 3.19 ERA). Both pitchers are coming off rough outings earlier this week, but the way the Rays are rolling and looking to sweep the Marlins on the road today, we have to side with great odds on Tampa Bay (+104 odds) as a nice underdog wager to go after. Another favorable pitching match-up we like lies with the Toronto Blue Jays vs. Atlanta Braves series. Despite the Jays’ 3-game losing skid, they’ll send Ricky Romero (7-1, 4.02 ERA) up against rookie starter Julio Teheran, who while pitching well in Triple A (5-2, 3.15 ERA), could be in for a rocky first start, as most young pitchers are during their opening debut. Romero gets the Jays just a slight favorite with -116 odds on the money line, and with the spread at -1 ½ runs for Toronto (+145 odds), it’s awfully tempting to go that route, considering that of Romero’s 7 wins, 6 of them have seen Toronto win by two or more runs. Keep in mind though, that Atlanta is the hottest team in the league with 6 straight wins, however streaks do have to come to a close at some time. One more interesting pitching match-up well-worth taking a look at lies in the Philadelphia vs. Baltimore series, where once again Philly’s Cliff Lee will try to get enough run support to earn him his first victory of the season. With a 2.92 ERA, it’s simply appalling that Lee is 0-3 on the season, but expect him to have another solid outing either way tonight against the O’s Jason Hammel (6-2, 2.97 ERA), who has also been outstanding this season. With Lee not getting much support, and two great pitchers on the mound today in this rubber match to close the series out, the 8 ½ runs on the total line find us itching to side with the under wager.
Other exciting MLB match-ups on the afternoon have to include the finale of the New York Mets vs. New York Yankees series, whereby the Bronx Bombers will try to complete a sweep of their cross-town foes, as Andy Pettitte (3-2, 2.78 ERA) takes on Jonathon Niese (4-2, 4.11 ERA). This would be the first home sweep of the Mets in nearly a decade, and starting pitching for the Yankees has been the big bright spot on their path to accomplishing that feat. With a veteran like Pettitte on the mound, and the Yankees’ bats coming alive, look out for a great opportunity to back the Yanks with the -1 ½ runs against the spread (EVEN money) as the best pick to find some decent winnings here. For the last few worthwhile wagers on Major League Baseball today, spot the Arizona Diamondbacks in a favorable position at home against the Oakland Athletics, as the Dbacks strive for a series sweep, and their 5th straight victory. Look for a low scoring game here as Joe Saunders (3-4, 3.65 ERA) squares off against Travis Blackley (0-1, 3.45 ERA). Lastly, we’ll shoot for a wager on the exciting series between the Texas Rangers and the San Francisco Giants, with Texas’ Alexi Ogando (1-0, 2.27 ERA) getting a rare start against SF’s Tim Lincecum (2-6, 5.83 ERA) who continues to struggle through his worst season yet in the Majors. Watch out for the possibility that the struggling Rangers get their bats back in order on the road in this Game 3, series-closing match-up.
