Mother Nature could influence Wildcard Weekend in the NFL, as inclement weather and freezing temperatures are expected in some of the cities hosting NFL games on Saturday and Sunday.
In Green Bay, sub-zero temperatures are expected for the weekend with some forecasters saying the wind chill could take the temperature to as low as minus-30.
On Sunday, the Packers are hosting the San Francisco 49ers and that game has seen the biggest adjustment on total points of any of the weekend’s betting lines. Bovada opened the wildcard game at 49 total points and it moved as far down as 46.5. As of Saturday morning, the line was back up to 47.
Sites such as topbet and sporstbook.com have said the big move in the total points has been due to the weather that is expected for the weekend. However, betting experts at betonline do not necessarily believe that freezing cold temperatures cause low scoring outcomes.
The weather is expected to be well below zero with the wind chill, but this season games in bad weather have seen large point totals scored.
However, other industry experts believe the total for the over/under should be as low as 43 for the Packers and 49ers game.
Over the last six head-to-head games between the 49ers and Packers, the OVER has cashed in all six.
As of Saturday morning, San Francisco was a short road favorite for Sunday’s game bouncing from -2.5 to -3.
The public bettor is much more focused on the 49ers-Packers game than any other even though there has been a lean towards the Saints also. Both the Chiefs vs. Colts and Chargers vs. Bengals are seeing two-way action.
Indianapolis opened as at -2.5 in their game with the Chiefs but that has been bet down in most sites like Bovada to just the Colts -1.
In Cincinnati, the line has stayed all week at -6.5 and -7 for Cincinnati, with the sharps laying the shorter of the two numbers and the public taking the 7, on most sites.
The weather could also play a role in Cincinnati as temperatures around freezing are expected, but a wintry mix of snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain could all hit the Cincinnati area.
This weekend should produce a larger handle as the betting on the playoffs takes off in the first round. With the weather possibly influencing point totals, some bettors will wait until the very last minute before placing their wager.
