Odds makers online and in casinos in Las Vegas are sharpening their pencils preparing for the upcoming NCAA football season.
As the season approaches and lines are released for win totals and for individual games, bettors can begin to see trends that are falling into place.
Florida State, the defending national champion is at the head of one of those trends. There is a large gap between the Seminoles and the rest of college football.
The Seminoles are expected to be favored by 18 or more points in each game this season. On some online sites such as Bovada and topbet, Florida State has a power rating 4 to 5 points higher than any other team in the country.
Following the Seminoles in the power ratings are Oregon, Alabama, Baylor, Auburn and Georgia to round out the top 5.
This season look for a number of teams to be greatly improved over last season. Included in that list is Georgia and Florida.
Georgia has a much higher power rating to start this season than they did to end last season. The Bulldogs suffered injury after injury last season, including losing four receivers, a running back and seven of their top players on defense.
Florida also moves up a great deal in the power ratings from last season. They have talented players moving into skill positions and should be a tough foe for their opponents in the SEC this season.
While some teams moved up this season, others have fallen. The Crimson Tide of Alabama are ranked No. 3 overall in power ratings but have dropped from last season.
Some odds makers like those on topbet and betonline, feel that Alabama will have difficulty scoring large amounts of point to cover big spreads. Part of that is due to Alabama having a new quarterback under center for the first time in five seasons.
In addition, Texas A&M and Missouri have fallen back in power ratings to start the 2014 season.
There are a number of top games to look at but one matchup early in the season features Michigan State visiting Oregon on September 6.
The line opened on this game with Oregon -15. Michigan State will not be as strong this season because of losing nearly half of their starting defense.
The speed that Oregon possesses will overwhelm the Spartans on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball.
Most Pac-12 teams have faced the speed Oregon puts on the field for the last three seasons, but the Spartans are not used to such athleticism and speed and it will be interesting to see if the Spartans can keep up with the Ducks.
