Packers visit Seahawks to Open 2014 NFL Season

The NFL preseason is behind us and the regular season starts tonight in the Pacific Northwest when the Green Bay Packers visit the Seattle Seahawks.

Green Bay’s strong offense will face off against the league’s top defense on Thursday Night Football.

The last time an elite offense met an elite defense, the Seahawks routed the Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl this past February to win their first Vince Lombardi Trophy.

Like Denver, the Packers offense is strong, led by Aaron Rodgers their talented quarterback.

Rodgers does not have fond memories of his last visit to CenturyLink field in 2012 when he had just 223 passing yards and no touchdowns while suffering eight sacks.

Since then however, he has a better offensive line and Eddie Lacy in the backfield. With Lacy at running back it adds to the offensive game plan not allowing defenses to just key on Rodgers.

Green Bay also has a healthy Randall Cobb at the wide out spot who can challenge the tough secondary of Seattle led by Richard Sherman.

An important component of this game will be to what extent the referees will enforce illegal conduct and defensive holding.

If calls are made early against Seattle’s secondary, that could open up the passing game for Green Bay as the defenders will back off a bit not to be called for a penalty.

It will also give the running game more room as the secondary will step back a few yards defending the receivers.

Seattle returns Russell Wilson at quarterback. The dual run pass threat will have Marshawn Lynch behind him in the backfield and Percy Harvin as his big target at wide out.

The Seattle defense lost three of its linemen from last season, but has reloaded. The secondary is one of football’s best. The key will be if Green Bay can have more third and short plays than third and long.

The current line at Bovada and sportsbook.com has Seattle favored by 5.5 points. On betonline and topbet, the point total is currently at 47.
