Another NFL has passed and another win for the sports books. Thanks to the outcome of important games, the sports books maintained their dominance over the public.
The betting public is huge. In no other sport in the U.S. do more participate than in football. Many of the public bettors make popular choices picking teams they like, they follow or who have won the previous week. Therefore, more times than not the sports books tend to win an overall weekend schedule.
When Pittsburgh ended its Sunday Night Football game victorious over the Cincinnati Bengals 30-20, as a home dog by 2.5 points, it assured nearly all sports books including Bovada of a winning weekend.
Some books, such as topbet, betonline and sportsbook.com would have lost week 15 if Cincinnati would have won and covered. That would have been just their second losing Sunday all season.
Most books started their Sunday’s strong in early games, but five games in the late afternoon hurt them and they needed Pittsburgh to give them the win for the week.
The biggest games on Sunday that helped the books win week 15 were the Rams, Vikings and Dolphins. Those three games became the parlay slayers. The Rams and Vikings winning outright as underdogs also helped to kill many teasers.
However, the bettors started out well when San Francisco easily covered at Tampa Bay and the Seahawks shut out the New York Giants. The house looked even worse when the always popular Kansas Chiefs blew out the Oakland Raiders 56-31.
The books were fortunate that both New Orleans and Dallas were beaten in the late afternoon. The push by Arizona however, hurt books like Bovada, as it kept many parlays alive.
The loss by New Orleans lowered their road record against the spread to a dismal 1-6. The Saints started the season setting the scoreboard on fire, but in their loss to St. Louis, the point total stayed UNDER for the fifth consecutive New Orleans game. That was strange for an offense led by Drew Brees that is known for lighting up the scoreboard.
The books are enjoying one of their best seasons in the past decade having lost just one week of the first 15 this season in the NFL. Most books have recorded 11 winning weeks, 1 losing week and 3 pushes.
For the day on Sunday, the favorites were 7-5-2 ATS while the OVER cashed out on 10 of the 14 games.
The lines for Week 16 have been out since late Sunday evening and the books will hope their season continues its impressive run.
