Titles on the Line in the Final Week of College Hoops

The 2012-2013 college basketball season comes to a close this weekend with a slate of huge games around the country. Some conferences and leagues have already started their tournaments and for everyone else those will get underway next week. As is usually the case, there are a slew of games where regular season conference titles are on the line. That also means positioning for conference tournaments and potential seeds for the NCAA tourney are at stake.

There are teams on fire like North Carolina and teams that aren’t so hot at the current moment like Arizona. You also have the end of one of college basketball’s greatest traditions in the final Big East tournament being played next week in Madison Square Garden.

Other News in College Basketball… Kentucky suffered a horrible loss to Georgia Thursday night. Unless the Wildcats make a deep run in the SEC tourney I’m not sure they’ll make the big dance… Michigan State beat Wisconsin by 15 Thursday and now has to hope rival Michigan beats Indiana for their share of the Big Ten title… The Big East is slated to become the ‘America 12 Conference’ according to numerous reports… Louisiana Tech saw their 18-game winning streak come to an end with a loss to New Mexico State Thursday night.

Alright, let’s break down some of the big games for Saturday and Sunday across the world of college basketball.

#3 Duke at North Carolina – Here’s what you need to know; Duke is unbeaten this season with Ryan Kelly on the court. Is North Carolina peaking at the right time though? They’ve won five straight with their new ‘4-guard offense.’ I still like the experience of Duke.

#9 Kansas State at #13 Oklahoma State – The Wildcats have already wrapped the second seed in the Big 12 Tourney so if chalk holds they’ll play KU in the finals. The Cowboys are interested in tourney positioning too and that’s I like them at home.

#24 Notre Dame at #8 Louisville – These two hooked up in that epic five-overtime battle won by the Irish last month and now end the season against each other. The Cards are tied with Georgetown and Marquette at the top while Notre Dame is two games back. I like Louisville on their home court.

#12 New Mexico at Air Force – The Lobos have already won the Mountain West title, but they are still thinking big for NCAA tourney seedings. While a one is out of the question, if things break right, a two or three could happen. Take the Lobos.

Clemson at #6 Miami – It’s simple really, the Canes win and they get the ACC title outright. A loss brings Duke a tie if the Blue Devils beat UNC. After that loss to Georgia Tech I expect Miami to roll despite losing three of their last four.

Arizona State at #18 Arizona – The Wildcats have lost two straight and four of their last seven. The Sun Devils have lost three straight and five of their last seven. At 20-10, an ASU win would put them at 10-8 in conference and could lock up a tourney bid. Arizona still has conference title aspirations but needs help. I like the Wildcats at home.

#2 Indiana at #7 Michigan – So much on the line in this game. A win by Michigan gives them a share of the Big Ten title and could potentially give them a #1 or #2 seed. A win by the Hoosiers gives them the title outright. This game is on the shoulders of Trey Burke in my opinion and he won’t fail. Take Michigan.
